Is conversion of decimal visual acuity measurements to logMAR values reliable?
Graefe's Archive for Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology May 13, 2019
Mataftsi A, et al. - Researchers examined the reliability of the conversion of decimal visual acuity (VA) to logMAR for clinical and research purposes. With 5 min interval, 74 consecutive patients underwent right eye VA measurement, using (a) the ETDRS chart (VAlog), (b) a decimal chart at 6 m (VA6m), and (c) a decimal chart at 4 m (VA4m). Using the formula logMAR = −log(decimal acuity), they converted decimal scores to logMAR. The Bland-Altman method was utilized to determine the agreement between VAlog, VA4m, and VA6m. Outcomes revealed overestimation of the true value of VA, especially in lower acuities, when decimal VA was converted to logMAR.
