Is computed tomography imaging of deviated nasal septum justified for obstruction confirmation?
ENT Journal Sep 27, 2019
Janovic N, et al. - In this investigation involving 225 patients, researchers ascertained if the diverse CT morphology of nasal septum deviations [NSD] (including earlier overlooked types and shapes) could anticipate obstruction severity. Participants in the study were patients with NSD. Findings suggested that patients with NSDs located in the anterior part of the septum always have some degree of nasal obstruction. On the other hand, patients with posterior NSDs did not necessarily report symptoms of obstruction regardless of how complex NSD they may have. No causal connection between Nasal Obstruction Symptom Evaluation scores and CT morphology and NSD angle was revealed by regression analysis. The presence of spurs and the division of nasal passages have no statistically significant predictive effect on the severity of the obstruction. The nasal obstruction severity could not be predicted by the CT morphology and the NSD angle. There is no justification for requesting CT examination solely to objectively verify nasal obstruction.
