Is balneotherapy effective for fibromyalgia? Results from a 6-month double-blind randomized clinical trial
Clinical Rheumatology May 11, 2018
Fioravanti A, et al. - Experts evaluated the effectiveness and tolerability of balneotherapy (BT) in patients with primary fibromyalgia syndrome (FS). A significant improvement of Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) and Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire total score (FIQ-Total) was seen in the BT group at the end of the treatment that persisted until 6 months, while no significant differences were found in the control group. For primary parameters, the differences between groups were significant at each time point. Results obtained for the other secondary outcomes were similar except for the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) outcome. In the BT group, 10 patients and 22 patients in the control group reported adverse events. The short- and long-term therapeutic efficacy of BT in FS was supported by the experts.
