Is a split-dose intravenous dexamethasone regimen superior to a single high dose in reducing pain and improving function after total hip arthroplasty? a randomized blinded placebo-controlled trial

The Bone & Joint Journal Nov 04, 2020

Lei Y, Huang Z, Huang Q, et al. - This study was undertaken to investigate if two equivalent perioperative split doses were more effective than a single preoperative dose. Researchers randomized a sum of 165 individuals into three groups: two perioperative saline injections (Group A, placebo), a single preoperative dose of 20 mg dexamethasone, and a postoperative saline injection (Group B), and two perioperative doses of 10 mg dexamethasone (Group C). The results of this study demonstrate that the perioperative dexamethasone gives short-term benefits in decreasing pain, postoperative nausea and vomiting, and inflammation, and elevated range of motion in the early postoperative period after total hip arthroplasty. This study’s findings demonstrate that a split-dose regimen was superior to a single high dose in decreasing pain and inflammation, and increasing range of motion, with better patient satisfaction.
