Iron supplementation improves cardiovascular outcomes in patients with heart failure

American Journal of Medicine Mar 14, 2019

Zhou X, et al. – In this study, researchers assessed the clinical consequences of iron in 1,404 patients with systolic heart failure and iron deficiency. They reported a decrease in hospitalization for worsening heart failure and the combined endpoint of death and heart failure hospitalization with iron supplementation. They also recorded improvement in New York Heart Association class, 6-minute walk distance, left ventricular ejection fraction, and peak oxygen consumption after iron supplement intake. A decline in serum levels of N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide and C-reactive protein was evident in subjects with iron repletion vs placebo therapy.
