Iron supplementation following bariatric surgery: A systematic review of current strategies
Obesity Reviews May 24, 2021
Anvari S, Samarasinghe Y, Alotaiby N, et al. - Current strategies for iron supplementation post-bariatric surgery were reviewed herein as well as their relative efficacy in managing iron deficiency (ID) and iron deficiency anemia (IDA) were evaluated. Exploration of MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials was performed. Analysis involved 49 studies with 12,880 patients. In the majority of patients, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (61.9%) was received. Iron supplementation was most often provided orally for prophylaxis of ID/IDA and was shown to be effective in 52% of studies. Effectiveness for treating ID was displayed by 50%(3/6) of the oral and 100% (3/3) of the IV supplementation strategies. Findings showed that highly variable iron supplementation strategies were used after bariatric surgery, and sufficient iron to avert the occurrence of ID and IDA was not offered by many of these strategies, potentially because of poor patient adherence.
