Iron overload in functional hyperandrogenism: In a randomized trial, bloodletting does not improve metabolic outcomes
Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism Jan 22, 2021
Ortiz-Flores AE, Martínez-García MÁ, Nattero-Chávez L, et al. - In this randomized, parallel, open-label, clinical trial, researchers sought to determine the impact of iron depletion on the insulin sensitivity and frequency of abnormal glucose tolerance in patients with functional hyperandrogenism submitted to standard therapy with combined oral contraceptives (COC), as well as to evaluate the overall safety of this intervention. Participants in the study were adult women with polycystic ovary syndrome or idiopathic hyperandrogenism. Thirty-three women were included by intention-to-treat from 2015 to 2019. In women with functional hyperandrogenism on COC, scheduled bloodletting does not improve insulin sensitivity. Women in the experimental arm displayed comparable chances of having prediabetes/diabetes than women submitted to observation.
