IQ in autism spectrum disorder: A population-based birth cohort study
Pediatrics Dec 06, 2021
Katusic MZ, Myers SM, Weaver AL, et al. - In this study, an average or higher IQ was evident in nearly half of patients with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).
From 31,220 individuals in a population-based birth cohort, ASD incident cases were identified by using research-defined autism spectrum disorder, inclusive criteria (ASD-R I ) and research-defined autism spectrum disorder, narrow criteria (ASD-R N ).
Average or higher IQ was present in 59.1% of those with ASD-R I (n = 890), 51.2% of those with ASD-R N (n = 453), and 42.8% of those with clinically diagnosed autism spectrum disorder (n = 187).
A greater probability of having an average or higher IQ was observed in boys with ASD than girls.
ASD patients with higher IQ remain at risk for not being identified.
