Invasive pulmonary aspergillosis in cirrhotic patients: Analysis of a 10-year clinical experience
Annals of Intensive Care Feb 24, 2019
Levesque E, et al. - In this monocentric retrospective study, researchers investigated factors for invasive pulmonary aspergillosis (IPA) as well as its prognostic effect in cirrhotic patients with a positive Aspergillus sp. culture in respiratory samples. These cases were matched with cirrhotic patients without positive Aspergillus respiratory sample. Two groups of patients were defined ultimately: those having putative aspergillosis or colonisation. This study included overall 986 cirrhotic patients were admitted to intensive care unit (ICU). A positive Aspergillus sp. respiratory sample was found in 60 patients. According to the findings, the risk of IPA, especially with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), was noted in patients with cirrhosis. Primarily among those with COPD, administering antifungal agents as soon as possible was recommended.
