Intravenous vs intravenous/oral antibiotics for perforated appendicitis in pediatric patients: A systematic review and meta-analysis
BMC Pediatrics Nov 17, 2019
Wang C, et al. - Since the use of oral (PO) antibiotics following a course of certain intravenous (IV) antibiotics was proposed in order to avoid the complications of IV medications and to reduce the cost, researchers conducted this systematic review and meta-analysis to ascertain if sequential IV/PO antibiotic therapy was equivalent to IV antibiotic therapy. Studies were screened to compare results in patients receiving sequential IV/PO and PO antibiotic therapy with perforated appendicitis. In total, 580 individuals were assigned to the IV group (n = 306) or the IV/PO group (n = 274). Regarding postoperative abscess, wound infection and readmission, sequential IV/PO antibiotic therapy was noninferior to IV antibiotic therapy. In any of the analyses, no obvious publication bias was identified.
