Intravenous dexmedetomidine vs tramadol for treatment of shivering after spinal anesthesia: A meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

BMC Anesthesiology May 08, 2020

Wang J, Wang Z, Liu J, et al. - As shivering is a frequent complication after spinal anesthesia, researchers here compared the efficacy of dexmedetomidine vs tramadol in the treatment of postspinal anesthesia shivering via performing a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials on this topic. PubMed, Embase, Cochrane library, Web of Science and Google Scholar yielded 13 randomized controlled trials including 864 individuals for inclusion in the meta- analysis. Findings suggest the superiority of dexmedetomidine vs tramadol in shivering treatment, given its higher effective rate of shivering control, earlier onset of action and lesser recurrence of shivering with higher incidence of sedation and lower incidences of nausea and vomiting. However, a higher incidences of hypotension and bradycardia was also observed in correlation with dexmedetomidine vs tramadol.
