Intravenous acetaminophen vs saline in perioperative analgesia with laparoscopic hysterectomy
American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology Jan 26, 2019
Rindos NB, et al. - Researchers performed a comparison of intravenous (IV) acetaminophen with placebo and evaluated postoperative pain control and opioid usage after laparoscopic hysterectomy via performing a prospective double-blind randomized study with 183 patients. Either acetaminophen or placebo was randomly assigned (1:1) to the patients. Acetaminophen and placebo groups displayed no difference in terms of postoperative pain, satisfaction scores, or opioid requirements. This study does not support routine use during hysterectomy because of the relatively high cost ($23.20 per dose in this study), lack of benefit and available oral alternatives.
