Intrauterine fundal anesthesia during endometrial ablation in the office: A randomized double-blind, non-inferiority trial
European Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Reproductive Biology Sep 13, 2020
Reinders IMA, Geomini PMAJ, Leemans JC, et al. - Researchers conducted a randomized, double-blinded non-inferiority trial investigating the effect of intrauterine fundal anesthesia during outpatient endometrial ablation. In this trial, a total of 96 women who were planned for a NovaSure endometrial ablation under local anesthesia were randomized to paracervical anesthesia combined with hysteroscopic fundal infiltration with anesthetics or paracervical anesthesia combined with hysteroscopic fundal infiltration with saline. In this study, non-inferiority of paracervical anaesthesia without fundal anaesthesia to the combination of paracervical anaesthesia with fundal anaesthesia was not confirmed in the reduction of pain during endometrial ablation. Hence no evidence was gained in support of leaving out fundal anaesthesia. Researchers thus recommend to use fundal anaesthesia combined with paracervical anaesthesia to annihilate pain during endometrial ablation in the office.
