Intratumoural budding is associated with poor clinical outcome in early‐stage clear cell carcinoma of ovary
Histopathology Jul 30, 2021
Lin LH, et al. - In view of the consideration that clear cell carcinoma of ovary (CCC) is a high-grade malignancy, researchers sought to determine the role of histological grading for assessing clinical outcome in CCC patients. They studied 76 of CCC with available clinical follow-up information. Of these, 40 cases (53%) were diagnosed with stage I disease at presentation; 65% showed complete response to treatment; 35% of patients had tumor recurrence or progression of disease despite treatment. At last follow-up, death because of disease was reported for 13%, 20% were alive with disease and 67% had no evidence of disease. Per findings, presence of tumor budding is linked with poorer outcome in patients with CCC besides the classic prognostic factors of stage and lymph node status. Particularly, they suggest evaluation of intratumoural budding as possibly valuable to better predict prognosis in patients with early-stage disease.
