Intrapartum uterine activity and neonatal outcomes: A systematic review
BMC Pregnancy and Childbirth Sep 18, 2020
Reynolds AJ, et al. - Via performing this study, researchers investigated if increased uterine activity (UA) during labor is linked with an elevated risk of either short- or long-term neurological injury in term neonates, or with neonatal proxy measures of intrapartum hypoxia-ischemia. Searching MEDLINE, CINAHL, and ClinicalTrials.gov, they identified 12 studies for inclusion. Umbilical artery pH was featured as an individual outcome in seven studies. The studies yielded some evidence indicating a non-specific predictive value of increased UA for depressed neurological function in the newborn. However, it is inconsistent and insufficient to support the conclusion that an association generally exists.
