Intraoperative use of methadone improves control of postoperative pain in morbidly obese patients: A randomized controlled study
Journal of Pain Research Oct 11, 2018
Machado FC, et al. - Researchers aimed at assessing the efficacy of the intraoperative use of methadone for postoperative pain in morbidly obese surgical patients. They randomly assigned patients with a body mass index of 35 kg/m2 or more undergoing bariatric surgery to receive either fentanyl (group F) or methadone (group M) in anesthesia induction and maintenance. Outcomes suggest that compared to fentanyl, intraoperative methadone can safely lower postoperative opioid consumption and improve postoperative pain scores in this population.
