Intraoperative ultrasound is associated with low re-excision rates following breast conserving surgery for non-palpable invasive breast cancers

American Journal of Surgery Apr 07, 2021

Baliski C, Jay M, Hamm J., et al. - For the removal of non-palpable breast cancer, wire localized breast biopsy (WLB) is the most commonly performed procedure, though intraoperative ultrasound (IOUS) is an alternative technique that may improve patient experience and have lower re-excision rates. Researchers reported a retrospective, single surgeon experience with IOUS vs WLB. They assessed 28 patients who underwent IOUS and WLB. High re-excision rates are observed in correlation with breast conserving surgery for non-palpable breast cancer. Outcomes suggest that intraoperative ultrasound can be performed with a favorable re-excision rate, and similar amounts of tissue in selected patients vs wire localized breast biopsy. The calculated resection ratio was lower with IOUS than WL BCS, but it was not statistically significant. Intraoperative ultrasound is an excellent alternative to wire localized biopsy.
