Intraoperative plasma transfusion volumes and outcomes in cardiac surgery
Journal of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesia Feb 14, 2020
Smith MM, et al. - In this retrospective analysis, researchers examined the results following intraoperative plasma transfusion in patients undergoing cardiac surgery. This inquiry was undertaken at an academic tertiary referral center and involved 1,794 patients who received intraoperative plasma transfusions. By employing multivariable regression analyses, the links between plasma transfusion volume, coagulation test values, and a primary outcome of early postoperative red blood cell transfusion were evaluated. Findings revealed inferior clinical outcomes related to higher plasma transfusion volumes among patients receiving cardiac surgery who were administered intraoperative plasma transfusion. Worse outcomes were evident in relation to higher pretransfusion International Normalized Ratio (INR) values; however, more favorable outcomes were experienced by those attaining a greater degree of INR correction following plasma transfusion.
