Intraoperative margin control in transoral approach for oral and oropharyngeal cancer
The Laryngoscope Jul 25, 2019
Tirelli G, et al. - The status of resection margins in a group of subjects with oral and oropharyngeal cancers treated with narrow-band imaging (NBI) and laser CO2 piecemeal resection (group 1) was contrasted with that of a historical group of patients (group 2) treated with NBI and conventional en bloc resection by the researchers in order to validate its reliability compared to definitive histological examination. In the two groups, the variation between deep positive margins was statistically important. The high sensitivity and specificity of frozen section analysis also illustrated its authenticity in the examination of larger samples corresponding to the whole margin. Hence, the combined use of NBI and piecemeal resection could signify an attractive surgical approach in order to enhance margin control.
