Intraoperative management of brain-dead organ donors by anesthesiologists during an organ procurement procedure: Results from a French survey
BMC Anesthesiology Jun 21, 2019
Champigneulle B, et al. - Researchers surveyed French anesthesiologists to know about usual anesthetic practices for brain-dead donors (BDD) during an organ procurement procedure. They also evaluated the knowledge and self-confidence of anesthesiologists with this practice. Analysis of 458 responses revealed awareness of guidelines regarding BDD management in 78% of the respondents. Respondents rarely considered advanced hemodynamic monitoring and endocrine substitution (31 and 35% of respondents, respectively). For fluid resuscitation, the use of crystalloids was reported by 98% of the respondents. Of overall respondents, 84, 61 and 27% considered the use of neuromuscular blockers, opioids and sedative agents, respectively, during the procedure. With regard to the expected influence of intraoperative anesthetic management on grafts' primary function, a very high level of agreement was reported. Overall, guidelines concerning organ donor management in the intensive care unit were followed in the declared anesthetic practice.
