Intraoperative ketamine in total knee arthroplasty does not decrease pain and narcotic consumption: A prospective randomized controlled trial

Journal of Arthroplasty May 19, 2019

Tan TL, et al. - The efficiency of subanesthetic dosing of ketamine during total knee arthroplasty (TKA) on postoperative pain and narcotic consumption was evaluated by the authors in this prospective, randomized, double-blinded clinical trial, which included a sum of 91 patients who were experiencing primary TKA with spinal anesthesia. The authors concluded that intraoperative ketamine does not result in a clinically significant improvement in pain and narcotic consumption after TKA, as considered by a part of the multimodal pain management protocol.
