Intraoperative ketamine for analgesia post-coronary artery bypass surgery: A randomized, controlled, double-blind clinical trial

Journal of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesia Nov 15, 2019

Cameron M, et al. - In this randomized, controlled, double-blind clinical trial conducted at a single university academic center, researchers investigated if ketamine use during coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) surgery results in a decrease in the quantity of opioids needed over the first 48 hours post-surgery. They administered ketamine, via the intravenous route, as a bolus dose of 0.5 mg/kg prior to skin incision, followed by an infusion of 0.5 mg/kg/h until the end of the operation in patients undergoing CABG with a normal left ventricular ejection fraction. Screening of 183 patients and randomization of 80 patients was done. Findings revealed no reduction in opioid consumption or pain scores postoperatively in relation to the administration of ketamine during CABG surgery.
