Intraoperative ketamine administration to prevent delirium or postoperative cognitive dysfunction: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Acta Anaesthesiologica Scandinavica Jul 13, 2018

Hovaguimian F, et al. - Researchers tested intraoperative ketamine administration as a preventive strategy against the development of postoperative delirium and postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD). They analyzed data from randomised controlled trials (RCTs) comparing intraoperative ketamine administration vs no intervention in adults undergoing surgery under general anaesthesia. Meta-analysis included 6 RCTs. The evidence from these studies failed to provide clarity regarding the impact of ketamine on postoperative delirium, however, data suggested that its administration may offer some protection towards POCD.
