Intraoperative hyperglycemia is independently associated with infectious complications after non-cardiac surgery
BMC Anesthesiology Jul 27, 2018
Shanks AM, et al. - Researchers determined the influence of intraoperative hyperglycemia on post-operative infectious complications in non-cardiac surgery by reviewing all National Surgery Quality Improvement Program patients undergoing general, vascular, and urological surgery at their tertiary care center. They assessed the association of hyperglycemia with the primary outcome of postoperative surgical site infection, pneumonia, urinary tract infection, or sepsis within 30 days by using multiple logistic regression adjusting for patient comorbidities and surgical factors. They reported a statistically significant risk-adjusted increase in infectious complications among patients with mild and moderate hyperglycemia. This is one of the first studies to show an independent link between intraoperative hyperglycemia and postoperative infectious complications.
