Intraoperative blood loss during induced abortion: A comparison of anesthetics
Anesthesiology Research and Practice Dec 06, 2018
Clare CA, et al. - In this Institutional Review Board (IRB)-approved retrospective chart review of the electronic medical records, researchers determined if there is a difference in intraoperative bleeding with inhalational vs noninhalational anesthetic agents for patients undergoing suction dilatation and curettage for first-trimester induced abortion. Study participants were patients undergoing induced abortion at gestational ages between 5 0/7 and 14 0/7 weeks of pregnancy at the New York City Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan. A statistically significant difference was found in the blood loss in patients receiving inhalational vs noninhalational agents. Although the total blood loss was not excessive in both groups, the greater blood loss with inhalation anesthetics might be important when approaching the patient with an increased risk of uterine bleeding during gynecologic procedures like those with recognized or unrecognized coagulopathy.
