Intraocular cytokine profile and autoimmune reactions in retinitis pigmentosa, age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma and cataract
Acta Ophthalmologica Oct 12, 2018
ten Berge JC, et al. - In patients with retinitis pigmentosa, age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma, and cataract, authors evaluated the intraocular cytokine levels and prevalence of intraocular antiretinal antibodies and linked the results to clinical manifestations. The involvement of intraocular inflammation in the pathogenesis of these entities was demonstrated by the increased levels of inflammatory cytokines in intraocular fluid of patients with originally noninflammatory ocular diseases. Furthermore, they noted an association of increasing age with increasing levels of intraocular cytokines.
