Intramuscular midazolam, olanzapine, ziprasidone, or haloperidol for treating acute agitation in the Emergency Department
Annals of Emergency Medicine Jun 13, 2018
Klein LR, et al. - Researchers compared haloperidol, olanzapine, midazolam, and ziprasidone to treat agitation in this prospective observational study of 737 consecutive patients receiving intramuscular medication to treat agitation in the Emergency Department (ED). In agitated ED patients, intramuscular midazolam was noted to be more effective in achieving sedation at 15 minutes than haloperidol, ziprasidone, and perhaps olanzapine. Compared to haloperidol, olanzapine provided more effective sedation than haloperidol. In terms of adverse events, no differences were identified.
