Intralesional methotrexate vs triamcinolone acetonide for localized alopecia areata treatment: A randomized clinical trial
Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology Mar 31, 2021
Hamdino M, et al. - In this comparative prospective, randomized single-blinded study, researchers compared the efficacy and safety of intralesional methotrexate (MTX) vs triamcinolone acetonide (TrA) in the treatment of localized alopecia areata (AA) in adults, both clinically and trichoscopically. Forty adult patients with localized AA were enlisted and divided into 2 groups. Twenty patients received intralesional TrA and the other 20 patients received intralesional MTX every 3 weeks for a total of 4 sessions. Intralesional MTX may be promising and comparable to intralesional TrA in the treatment of localized AA in adults, but more controlled and extensive trials are needed. Trichoscopy can detect early clinical response by the disappearance of AA specific trichoscopic signs, as well as early detection of adverse effects.
