Intracranial pressure during hemodialysis in patients with acute brain injury
Acta Anaesthesiologica Scandinavica Mar 01, 2019
Lund A, et al. - In 13 patients with acute brain injury admitted to Rigshospitalet (Copenhagen, Denmark) from 2012 to 2016, researchers assessed the alterations in intracranial pressure (ICP) during hemodialysis in a retrospective study. They monitored ICP while the patients were on intermittent hemodialysis (IHD) or continuous renal replacement therapy, and analyzed data from the first dialysis session. Prior to and during dialysis, they separately estimated area under the curve divided by time (AUC/t) for ICP. Findings revealed an association between hemodialysis and increased ICP in neurocritically ill patients. Furthermore, a possible link was suggested between the degree of the increase and initial plasma urea levels.
