Intracranial cellular schwannomas: A clinicopathologic study of 20 cases
Histopathology Aug 09, 2019
D'Almeida Costa F, Dias TM, Lombardo KA, et al. - A total of 20 cellular schwannomas with predominant intracranial involvement were recognized by the experts in order to characterize the clinicopathologic subgroup of intracranial cellular schwannomas. In all cases tested, immunohistochemical stains illustrated the expression of Schwann cell markers (S100 protein, SOX10, Collagen IV) and protected H3 K27 trimethylation. Fourteen individuals had postoperative follow-up ranging from 2 months to 21 years (mean 66 months). Local recurrence/endurance occurred in 6 cases and 5 tumors were initially incompletely resected, in individuals with follow-up. No metastatic disease or deaths were noted. Therefore, intracranial cellular schwannomas shared morphologic and immunophenotypic characteristics with cellular schwannomas at other sites, may exhibit locally aggressive growth, however, it seemed to lack metastatic potential.
