Intimate relationships and sexual behavior in young women with depression
Journal of Adolescent Health Aug 18, 2018
Burke PJ, et al. - Researchers investigated whether there was an association between depressive symptoms and high-risk sexual behavior in young women via conducting semistructured interviews. They found that depressed young women might limit intimate relationships, yet take part in frequent and unsafe (eg, no condom) sex to cope with their symptoms and their endeavours to feel better might give just temporary relief or result in feeling worse. The findings suggested that depressed young women would benefit from tailored interventions that identify and counter unhealthy thoughts, attitudes, behaviors, and patterns related to sexual relationships and behavior, minimize factors that impair healthy decision-making, and foster development of alternative affect regulation strategies.
