Intestinal permeability in human nonalcoholic fatty liver disease: A systematic review and meta‐analysis
Liver International Oct 26, 2020
De Munck TJI, Xu P, Verwijs HJA, et al. - The systematic review and meta‐analysis were performed to evaluate the intestinal permeability in human nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. Researchers performed this research to address the intestinal permeability (IP) in correlation with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) presence or severity as characterized by the presence of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis and the degree of steatosis, hepatic inflammation, or fibrosis. A total of 14 studies were included. Studies evaluating IP in adult (n = 6) and paediatric (n = 8) NAFLD exhibited similar outcomes. The data revealed that IP seems to be elevated in NAFLD patients in comparison with healthy controls and is correlated with the degree of hepatic steatosis.
