Interpretation of HbA1c in primary care and potential influence of anaemia and chronic kidney disease: An analysis from the Copenhagen Primary Care Laboratory (CopLab) Database
Diabetic Medicine Jul 15, 2018
Borg R, et al. - In a large population (198,346 individuals) in primary care, researchers investigated the association of fasting plasma glucose with HbA1c measurements, as well as how anemia or chronic kidney disease impacts the interpretation of HbA1c values. They noted that the fasting plasma glucose-HbA1c relationship was similar to the regression described in the A1c-Derived Average Glucose (ADAG) study, which was based on average capillary and interstitial glucose. No significant impact of mild to moderate anemia and CKD was revealed on the interpretation of HbA1cas a marker of retrograde glycemia. Thereby justifying the use of HbA1c without adjustment in primary care.
