Interleukin 8 may predict surgical necrotizing enterocolitis in infants born less than 1500 g
Cytokine Nov 02, 2020
Seo YM, Lin YK, Im SA, et al. - Researchers aimed at determining the role of serum cytokines in the development of feeding intolerance (FI) or Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) outcomes in very low birth weight infants (VLBWIs). They performed prospective enrollment of infants born weighing < 1500 g or of 32 weeks of gestational age. NEC or FI group included 17 (27.4%) infants, and surgical NEC was evident in 6 (9.7%) infants. The surgical NEC infants had significantly elevated IL-8 measured within 72 hrs of life. Infants in the NEC/FI group had significantly higher IL-10 measured within 72 hrs of life. The severity of NEC can be predicted by determining cytokines.
