Interhospital transfer in low-volume and high-volume Emergency Departments and survival outcomes after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest: A nationwide observational study and propensity score–matched analysis
Resuscitation Apr 12, 2019
Park JH, et al. - Researchers examined how inter-hospital transfer (IHT) influence outcomes of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) patients. The nationwide emergency medical services (EMS)–based OHCA registry in Korea yielded data of 54,779 OHCA patients. Of these, they included 11,632. IHT was reported in 1360 of 4477 patients (30%) who visited low-volume Emergency Departments (LVEDs; ≤100 OHCA patients) initially and 604 of 7155 patients (8%) who visited high-volume Emergency Departments (HVEDs; >100 OCHA patients) initially. The propensity score–matching analysis revealed a higher likelihood of good neurological recovery in the IHT group than the non-IHT group in LVED visitors, However, no significant difference of good neurological recovery was noted between the non-IHT group and the IHT group in HVED visitors. These findings emphasize considering IHT when treating OHCA patients in LVEDs.
