Intercostal blocks with liposomal bupivacaine in thoracic surgery: A retrospective cohort study
Journal of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesia Oct 16, 2020
Marciniak DA, Alfirevic A, Hijazi RM, et al. - Researchers examined whether addition of liposomal bupivacaine (LB) to bupivacaine-containing intercostal nerve blocks (ICNBs) can improve analgesia and reduce opioid consumption and hospital length of stay compared with bupivacaine-only ICNBs. In this retrospective, observational investigation, patients receiving ICNBs with bupivacaine plus LB (LB group) vs bupivacaine only (control group) after minimally invasive anatomic pulmonary resection were compared with respect to pain intensity scores and cumulative opioid consumption within the first 72 postoperative hours. They assessed a total of 396 patients; of these, 178 (45%) received LB and 218 (55%) did not. Outcomes revealed no superior postoperative analgesia or no effect on the rate of hospital discharge in correlation with providing LB with bupivacaine in ICNBs.
