Interactions of alcohol and postmenopausal hormone use in regards to mammographic breast density
Cancer Causes and Control Jun 29, 2018
Yaghjyan L, et al. - Researchers examined the correlation of alcohol intake with mammographic breast density by hormone therapy (HT) status in the Nurses’ Health Study and Nurses’ Health Study II cohorts, which includes 2,100 cancer-free postmenopausal women. Digitized film mammograms using a computer-assisted thresholding technique were used to measure percent breast density (PD), absolute dense (DA), and non-dense areas (NDA). A food frequency questionnaire (0, < 5, and ≥ 5 g/day) was used to evaluate alcohol consumption. The links were explored using generalized linear regression in women with no HT history, current, and past HT users. No links between alcohol consumption and PD and DA, but there was an inverse association with NDA, according to multivariable analyses. Overall, no variance by HT status was seen in the observed associations of alcohol with breast density.
