Interaction of body mass index or waist-to-hip ratio and sun exposure associated with nonmelanoma skin cancer: A prospective study from the Women’s Health Initiative
Cancer Dec 17, 2018
Chan AA, et al. - In this study involving 71,645 postmenopausal women, researchers investigated if the risk of nonmelanoma skin cancer (NMSC) with sun exposure was consistent across different levels of body size, given that obesity has been shown to decrease the risk of NMSC incidence. NMSC was detected in 13,351 participants (18.6%). Lower NMSC hazard rates were observed in relation to a body mass index ≥ 25 kg/m2 or a waist-to-hip ratio ≥ 0.80. Increasingly higher hazard rates with increasing sun exposure were reported among women in the overweight group vs those in the normal-weight group.
