Interaction between slow wave sleep and obstructive sleep apnea in prevalent hypertension

Hypertension Feb 13, 2020

Ren R, Covassin N, Zhang Y, et al. - By analyzing patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) (n = 7,107) and primary snorers (n = 1,118) who underwent in-laboratory polysomnography, researchers assessed if slow wave sleep (SWS) percentage alters the link between OSA and prevalent hypertension, given OSA patients show decreased amounts of SWS because of frequent abnormal breathing events and their influences on sleep architecture, and given the link of reduced SWS with hypertension reported in community-based investigations. A significant interaction impact of OSA and SWS on prevalent hypertension was revealed in multivariable logistic regression model. Findings revealed the link of reduced SWS with a dose-dependent rise in odds of prevalent hypertension among patients with OSA. The influences of SWS were likely to be changed by OSA severity. Findings are suggestive of the possible implication of SWS in the increased risk of cardiovascular diseases shown by patients with OSA.
