Inter-observer variation in the histopathology reports of head and neck melanoma; A comparison between the seventh and eighth edition of the AJCC staging system
European Journal of Surgical Oncology Oct 28, 2018
Berger DMS, et al. - Researchers investigated the inter-observer variation of histopathology reports and its impact on recommended treatment policy via retrospectively analyzing 296 cases, diagnosed as primary cutaneous head and neck melanoma (2005–2016), referred to the Netherlands Cancer Institute (NCI) for treatment following prior diagnosis in another hospital (non-NCI). They noted significant changes in treatment decisions following the review of histopathologic parameters of primary cutaneous head and neck melanoma by a NCI pathologist. Somewhat fewer discordances between NCI and non-NCI reports were reported after introduction of the AJCC 8th edition; this consequently led to a smaller impact on treatment planning. When a sentinel lymph node biopsy is considered for additional staging, expert review remains indicated in selected cases.
