Intensive care unit occupancy and premature discharge rates: A cohort study assessing the reporting of quality indicators
Journal of Critical Care Oct 19, 2019
Blayney MC, et al. - In this retrospective cohort study, researchers explored the connection between daily ICU occupancy and premature discharge rates, as well as assessed benchmarking care across Scotland using daily occupancy. Sixty-five thousand four hundred seventy-two discharges occurred over 57,812 unit-days. Data reported that early discharge rates above 70%, 80% and 90% occupancy were 3.9%, 5.0% and 7.5% respectively. Occupancies with significantly higher outcome rates are similar to 80% for early discharge and 90% for non-clinical transfer (NCT). The data presented in this work showed a clear link between daily ICU occupancy and early discharge/NCT. Daily occupancy may be better than mean annual occupancy in the quality of benchmark care.
