Intensive and app-delivered occupational therapy to improve upper extremity function in early diffuse cutaneous systemic sclerosis: A pilot two-arm trial
Rheumatology Apr 15, 2021
Murphy SL, Barber M, Huang S, et al. - The present study was performed to evaluate the short and longer-term effects of two occupational therapy interventions on hand disability. Researchers randomized individuals with diffuse cutaneous systemic sclerosis to one of two 18-week interventions: Intensive group, receiving 8-weekly in-person occupational therapy sessions with App-delivered home exercises, or App alone group. The treatment effects were analyzed by using linear mixed models. It has been reported that both interventions exhibited beneficial effects on hand disability. At 18 weeks, participants in the App alone group improved equally to the Intensive group. The data give support for future study into telehealth rehabilitation approaches.
