Intensity of lipid lowering with statin therapy in patients with cerebrovascular disease vs coronary artery disease: Insights from the PALM registry
Journal of the American Heart Association Oct 07, 2019
Xian Y, Navar AM, Li S, et al. - Given that statin therapy is strongly suggested by current treatment guidelines for secondary prevention, researchers looked for any possible differences in patients’ perceptions of cardiovascular risk, beliefs on cholesterol, or the intensity of prescribed statin therapy among patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) vs cerebrovascular disease (CeVD) vs both CAD and CeVD (CAD&CeVD) in the PALM (Patient and Provider Assessment of Lipid Management) registry. For 3,232 secondary prevention patients who were managed at 133 US clinics, data were obtained informing about statin use, intensity, and core laboratory low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels. As far as patient-perceived cardiovascular risk or statin beliefs were concerned, no significant differences were found, but the likelihood of receiving higher intensity statin or achieving low-density lipoprotein cholesterol < 100 mg/dL was significantly less among patients with CeVD vs those with CAD only.
