Intensity and temporal patterns of physical activity and cardiovascular disease risk in midlife

Preventive Medicine May 04, 2019

Niemelä M, et al. - In an analysis of data from 4,582 participants of the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1966 study, researchers determined the intensity and temporal trends of physical activity (PA) and sedentary time measured continuously by an accelerometer and their relationship with cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. Low risk for CVD was present in most of the participants. They identified four distinct PA clusters: inactive, evening active, moderately active, and very active, which were well distinguishable by the intensity and temporal patterns of activity. Across the clusters, men and women had significantly different 10-year CVD risks. More active clusters vs less active clusters demonstrated higher levels of HDL cholesterol, in both sexes. In women, the moderately active cluster vs the inactive and evening active clusters had lower total cholesterol.
