Insurance status and survival of multiple myeloma (MM) patients
Journal of Clinical Oncology Jun 12, 2019
Chamoun K, et al. - Researchers used the National Cancer Database to determine if MM patients (pts) survival is impacted by their insurance status. They analyzed data from 117,926 MM pts diagnosed between year 2005 and 2014, with overall survival (OS) being the primary outcome, assessed using Kaplan-Meier method and Cox model. Of overall study sample, 55% were males. Median age at diagnosis was 67 years (19-90). Medicare (52%), private insurance (35%) or Medicaid (5%) was the primary insurance. In this study, 3% participants were uninsured. Pts with primary MM, lower Charlson Comorbidity Index, treatment in academic institutions, higher median regional income, or private insurance experienced better OS, by univariate analysis. Longer OS was reported for pts with private insurance vs Medicare pts, when limiting the analysis to pts ≥ 65 years old. Findings revealed the associations of insurance type and regional income, with MM survival. This could be associated with affordability of oral antineoplastic medications.
