Insurance coverage and healthcare use among children with diabetes
Pediatric Diabetes Feb 26, 2021
Amin B, Yeduri R, Tumin D, et al. - Using the nationally representative 2016–2019 National Survey of Children's Health, researchers sought to explore how the interruption of health insurance coverage may affect healthcare use among children with diabetes mellitus (DM). The sample consisted of children, aged 0 to 17 years, with DM. Outcomes involved emergency department visits, specialist visits, and unmet healthcare needs in the last 12 months. Based on a sample of 548 children, 56% had continuous private insurance coverage, compared with 32% with continuous public insurance, and 12% with discontinuous coverage. Children with coverage gaps in the multivariable analysis were significantly less likely to have visited a specialist in the past 12 months than children with continuous private coverage. For children with DM, particularly those from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds, this study points to a need to establish and maintain specialist follow‐up.
