Insulin therapy increases cardiovascular risk: Time for a sea of change in type 2 diabetes treatment
Progress in Cardiovascular Diseases Sep 29, 2017
Herman ME, et al. - This study analyzed data on the impacts of insulin therapy on cardiovascular (CV) health and longevity in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D). Most of the evidence from large observational studies demonstrated strong dose-dependent associations for injected insulin with increased CV risk and worsened mortality. A strong indication was also seen in large-scale evaluations for a poorer short- and long-term safety profile of insulin therapy, compared with other anti-T2D therapies. It was advocated that insulin therapy should be contemplated for its potential adverse effects against proven CV benefits noted for select other therapies for T2D as reported in recent large randomized controlled trials.
