Insufficient use of corticosteroids without immunosuppressants results in higher relapse rates in Takayasu arteritis
The Journal of Rheumatology Feb 13, 2020
Mutoh T, et al. - Researchers recruited a total of 105 individuals with Takayasu arteritis (TA) who satisfied the criteria of the Japanese Circulation Society and American College of Rheumatology between 1990 and 2015 to examine the correlation between the initial prednisolone (PSL) dose and relapse in TA. The clinical characteristics and results of individuals with TA were retrospectively assessed. Relapse was noted in 57 (59.4%) of 96 individuals treated with immunosuppressive therapy at diagnosis during a median follow-up of 56 months. Evidence showed that a higher dose of PSL was correlated with a significant decrease in the relapse rate. The impact of combination therapy on relapse requires to be additionally examined. In Takayasu arteritis TA, lower-dose PSL monotherapy is an undesirable approach for remission induction, despite low disease activity.
