Insufficient sleep duration and its association with breakfast intake, overweight/obesity, socio-demographics and selected lifestyle behaviors among Saudi school children

Nature and Science of Sleep Oct 28, 2019

Al-Hazzaa HM, et al. - Using a specifically designed self-reported questionnaire filled by the children’s parents, researchers studied the prevalence of nocturnal sleep duration in Saudi children and its connection with breakfast intake, screen time, physical activity levels and socio-demographic variables. To choose 1,051 elementary school children in Riyadh, a multistage stratified cluster random sampling technique was used. Over 71% of Saudi school children did not reach the required amount of sleep at night. Data reported that insufficient nocturnal sleep prevalence among Saudi children was high. Findings suggested an association of insufficient sleep with breakfast and several important socio-demographic and lifestyle behaviors. The study's findings support the development of strategies to prevent inadequate sleep and help Saudi kids change their sleeping habits.
