Insufficient physical activity and high sedentary behaviour are associated with loneliness in adolescents with overweight/obesity: Evidence from 23 low- and middle-income countries
Pediatric Obesity Jul 31, 2021
Khan A, et al. - Data from the Global School-based Student Health Surveys were used, which were collected from 23 low-and-middle-income countries, to assess the correlations of physical activity (PA) and sedentary behaviour (SB) with loneliness among adolescents with overweight/obesity. Of the 12,133 candidates aged 12–17 years with overweight/obesity (48.4% girls), 12% were lonely, with a wide variation across countries ranging from 4% in Laos to 32% in Afghanistan. Loneliness was associated with high SB and insufficient PA. Future research could look into the direction of these relationships and evaluate strategies for improving these social well-being indicators in adolescents who are overweight or obese.
